WEIGHT LOSS HYPNOSIS - STUDY 1

Bolocofsky, David N.; Spinler, Dwayne; Coulthard-Morris, Linda (1985). Effectiveness of hypnosis as an adjunct to behavioural weight management. Journal of Clinical Psychology, 41 (1), 35-41.

The first study, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, divided 109 people into two groups for a nine-week study. The first group underwent changes in their daily diet, along with adhering to a regular exercise regime too, without the addition of hypnosis. The second group received the same diet and exercise regime, but also received hypnosis for reinforcement.

After nine weeks, not surprisingly, both groups had lost weight due to the changes in diet and exercise while under supervision, with the hypnosis group loosing slightly more weight overall.

However, the main difference that was noted was not the initial weight loss but the long-term results. Both groups underwent an eight-month and a two-year follow up to see how their weight loss had progressed.

The group that did not have hypnosis did not go on to lose any more weight. Most of the group had actually put back on most of the weight they had lost initially.

The hypnosis group, however, continued to lose weight during both intervals and the study showed that far more people in the hypnosis group met their long-term weight loss goals.

This research proves that hypnosis can make a significant positive impact on the success of weight loss, both in the short term but more importantly in the long term too. People who undergo hypnosis along with a change to diet and exercise are more likely to reach and maintain their weight loss goals than those who simply diet.

There is no magic pill for weight loss -  you have to follow a healthy eating and exercise plan however hypnosis can not only make these changes easier, it can also help you to incorporate permanent life style changes into your daily life which will support weight loss maintenance.

WEIGHT LOSS HYPNOSIS - RESEARCH STUDY 2

WEIGHT LOSS HYPNOSIS - STUDY 2

Cochrane, Gordon; Friesen, J. (1986). Hypnotherapy in weight loss treatment. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 54, 489-492.

The next study, published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, investigated the effects of hypnosis on weight loss for 60 females who were at least 20% overweight and who were not involved in any other treatment. The researchers interviewed each participant about their family background, educational background, as well as asking them how well they thought they could be hypnotized.

The group was then split into two groups - one group received hypnosis and the other group did not receive any hypnosis. Both groups received information on weight loss behavioural treatments as well as counselling.

The results were very interesting. The group using hypnosis lost an average of 17 pounds at the six-month follow up. The group that did not receive hypnosis only lost an average of half of a pound.

This study also found that "hypnotizability", along with social and educational backgrounds had nothing to do with the results

WEIGHT LOSS HYPNOSIS - RESEARCH STUDY 3

WEIGHT LOSS HYPNOSIS - STUDY 3

Kirsch, Irving (1996). Hypnotic enhancement of cognitive-behavioural weight loss treatments--Another meta-reanalysis. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 64 (3), 517-519.

In this meta-analysis, (which is when researchers look across multiple studies), the results of the two studies I just mentioned, as well as other studies were investigated.

In studies that looked at the effects of hypnosis on weight loss, the average short-term weight loss was 6 pounds for those who did not undergo hypnosis in comparison to 12 pounds for those who had hypnosis.

Over the long term the average weight loss without hypnosis remained at 6 pounds, but with hypnosis it jumped to 15 pounds.

These results clearly show that hypnosis does improve weight loss success. Not only is hypnosis successful in the short term, but its effects are long lasting too. Even when the hypnosis sessions had finished, participants of these studies continued to lose weight for many years after, with most reaching their ideal weights
