What is a habit?

 

A habit is a conditioned response to a stimulus which becomes automatic over time. It is a learned behaviour that we repeat over and over again until it becomes automatic. Mostly everything we do is life is habitual in nature from the breakfast we eat,  the way in which we drive to work. Habits save us time as we no longer need to think consciously about doing certain things - we just do them! Imagine how much time we would need every day if we had to constantly relearn how to do things!

 

Bad Habits - what makes them bad?

 

A bad habit, like a habit, is a conditioned response, however unlike good habits, bad habits don’t help us but hinder us in some way. When we do something that we know isn’t good for us or makes us feel bad, over and over again, it is known as a bad habit. Examples of bad habits are nail biting, smoking, hair pulling, swearing. However a bad habit exists because it provides us with a positive benefit and this needs to be replaced before you can overcome your bad habit.

Addictions - What are they?

 

An addiction is basically a bad habit - all be it extreme in nature -  it is something that we know causes us harm on some level - but which we are powerless to overcome. We usually develop addictions as a way to help us change how we feel. I am sure you are all aware of the saying ‘drowning your sorrows’ in relation to drinking to take away pain, misery etc.

 

Addictions and some bad habits, provide a release in some way - from stress, anxiety, emotional distress, anger or even boredom - providing a sense of relief.

 

Breaking Bad Habits and Overcoming Addictions - is will power enough?

 

If you suffer from addictions or bad habits, I am sure you are aware just how difficult it is to overcome these destructive habits. And what’s more - self esteem is diminished as you struggle to give up your addiction or habit. It is virtually impossible to overcome addictions and some bad habits on your own - will power accounts for nothing!

 

BREAKING BAD HABITS AND OVERCOMING ADDICTIONS SUCCESSFULLY

 

The first mistake many addicts make - or those trying to break a bad habit is that they do not replace the benefit gained from the habit or addiction. If you do not replace the benefit gained from your habit or addiction (stress relief, overcoming boredom etc) you will fail!

 

We live our lives according the the pain and pleasure principal. Our addictions and bad habits - though consciously give us pain - at an unconscious level they provide a positive benefit or they would not exist. So the pleasure we get from the addiction or habit is stronger than the pain - hence we keep them.

 

So replacing the addiction or bad habit with a new positive habit which gives your more pleasure will ultimately get rid of that bad habit.

 

I have worked with many people who have wanted to get over addictions or bad habits and have been very successful in doing so. The only thing that I ask of you - is that you are ready to let go of the addiction or habit.
