Generalised Anxiety Disorder -
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common anxiety disorder that involves chronic worrying, nervousness, and tension. Unlike a phobia, where your fear is connected to a specific thing or situation, the anxiety is a general feeling of dread or unease.
This anxiety is less intense than a panic attack, but is long lasting making normal life difficult and relaxation impossible. If you have generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) you may worry about the same things that other people do: health issues, money, family problems etc but your level of worry is far greater.
People with social phobia fear and avoid situations in which they may be judged by others. They may well resort to avoiding situations that make them feel anxious thus missing out on many opportunities in life. People with social phobia are at high risk for alcohol or other drug dependence, because they may come to rely on drinks or drugs to relax in social situations.
There is usually a chronic confidence issue underlying social phobia and when this is addressed (we are all imperfectly perfect) you will begin to notice your ‘social’ life begins to expand along with your confidence.
People with panic disorder have sudden and repeated attacks of fear/panic that last for several minutes or even longer. These are called panic attacks. Panic attacks are characterized by a fear of disaster or of losing control even when there is no real danger.
A person may also have a strong physical reaction during a panic attack. It may feel like having a heart attack. Panic attacks can occur at any time, and many people with panic disorder dread the possibility of having another attack.
The fact than most sufferers have little idea as to when an attack may occur, increases their anxiety further. Panic attacks can seem random and unpredictable and can knock the confidence of the sufferer. As a result a person with panic disorder may become depressed or ashamed because they are unable to do things that most people take for granted such as going the the shops or socializing so panic attacks to have a debilitating effect on the sufferers life.
