What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a safe, pleasant and natural state that we go into several times during the day without being aware. Have you ever lost yourself in a good book or a TV program without being aware of time passing by? It is estimated that we spend 4 hours of our day in hypnosis! Hypnosis is also the state we enter every night just before we fall asleep and this is also known as the hypnogogic state.

There is nothing mystical about hypnosis. Hypnosis itself is a trance state characterized by mental and physical relaxation, heightened awareness and increased suggestibility. Hypnosis opens up the doorway to our unconscious mind (the seat of our emotions) allowing us to make changes in our behaviours at the deepest level.

Is Hypnosis safe?

Yes. Hypnosis is a natural, safe state associated with deep mental and physical relaxation. Hypnosis is a state we enter into every night just before we fall asleep and one we enter several times during the day too. Have you ever lost yourself in a novel or driven to work quite unaware of the actual journey? Furthermore the hypnotic state benefits our overall well-being.

Can I be hypnotized?

Yes. Everyone has the capability to be hypnotized. All you need to do is want to be! And besides - you spend around 60 - 70% of your day in hypnosis!

Can I get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis?

No. Even if, for whatever reason, the trance is not terminated you will automatically come out of trance by yourself. Hypnosis is just a state of deep relaxation.

How Does Hypnosis Work?

Hypnosis allows us to work with the subconscious mind (your unconscious mind) which is the largest part of your mind and this mind is located in the right side of the brain. The conscious mind is the smallest and least powerful of your minds and is located in the left side of the brain. This is a simplification of what is a complex system however for the purpose of this question it will suffice.

Now if we consider the properties of these two hemispheres we can begin to understand just how hypnosis works. The conscious mind, the part we use during our waking day (also know as our willpower) functions in a critical and logical way with the information that it processes. It does not accept information without first assessing whether it is logically verifiable or 'true'.

However the subconscious mind functions very differently from the conscious mind, in fact quite the opposite! The subconscious or unconscious mind accepts all the information it receives without questioning it or analysing it. For the subconscious mind everything seems true.

It is this characteristic of uncritical acceptance which we can utilize in hypnotherapy to bring about positive changes in behaviour, to overcome phobias or change habits. It's important to know that the subconscious mind controls all our habits, emotions and feelings, so if we can access the subconscious mind with the power of hypnosis, we can implant new suggestions and ideas in order to bring about the changes that are needed.

So during an hypnosis session the hypnotist, more commonly known as a hypnotherapist, will plant ideas and suggestions deep within the subconscious mind which will then bring about the changes required. For example, during a stop smoking session, the hypnotherapist will give suggestions that the client is a non smoker now and finds smoking revolting or they would ‘persuade’ the overweight person with the help of hypnosis, that they now crave healthy foods and eat only when hungry etc. These new suggestions then become embedded in the subconscious and lead to the desired changes.

It is important to note that your unconscious mind does have a moral code and it will never accept any suggestions that are against your moral and ethical code. So your hypnotherapist could not plant a suggestion that you rob a bank!

What does hypnosis feel like?

Hypnosis is blissfully relaxing and calming. It is a total mind and body relaxation where you feel calm and serene whilst remaining alert and focused. You are aware of everything whilst in hypnosis and are in control at all times. There is no mysticism to hypnosis – it is a natural and safe 'trance' like state and it is the same state of mind that one reaches during meditation, thus providing the same health and emotional benefits. The hypnotic state on its own has proven health benefits as it allows us time to switch off both mentally and physically.

Is hypnosis like sleep?

No. Unlike sleep you remain alert and aware of your surroundings and what is being said.

Do I remain in control during hypnosis?

During hypnosis you remain aware of everything around you and what is being said. You are in control at all time and will not do anything or say anything against your will. You will experience a wonderfully relaxing and calm state of mind where you remain completely aware and your mind is highly focused.

How many sessions will I need?

Every client is different and every problem or issue is unique to the individual. Some clients may only need 1 or 2 sessions, however for emotional issues clients may require between 2 and 6 sessions. Issues such as depression may require more. Smoking cessation is a one session treatment.

What is the difference between clinical and analytical hypnotherapy?

Clinical hypnotherapy (suggestion hypnotherapy) uses the power of suggestion and hypnosis to re-programme our unconscious mind. It can be used to treat habits and simple problems such as confidence issues, weight and pain management.

Analytical hypnotherapy (hypnoanalysis) is used to treat psychological or emotional issues. It works on the principle of cause and effect which states that for every illness (effect) there is a cause and hypnoanalysis seeks to uncover the origins of the problem and resolve them to release the associated symptoms.

Do you give any guarantees?

No. The General Hypnotherapy Register regards guarantees within hypnotherapy as unethical. Just as doctors can not guarantee any surgery, course of medication etc, will work, a hypnotherapist can not either.  If I feel that hypnotherapy will not resolve an issue, I will inform you. However I can guarantee that the processes and the programmes (weight loss/anxiety/stop smoking) do work and are highly successful.

I look forward to hearing from you.
